It only has 250 rooms and 8000 acres, but we rather like it. Actually the Vanderbilts built the largest house in the U.S. right here in Asheville. Biltmore Estates transports you right from a busy road into a world of natural and man-made beauty. I love that it is still privately owned and that even the youngest members of the family are involved in preservation. I also love that the orginal Vanderbilts built a lovely village for their workers and a comfortable building in town for the black men who helped build the house. Even now they employ 2000 people which provides a considerable boost to the economy and every one we encountered were exceptionally polite and helpful. It all makes me feel so much better about dishing out a small fortune to see it!
