Our day at the Grand Canyon included a 33-mile, 6-hour drive along the south rim. During most months of the year a lot of it is closed to private vehicles. Instead shuttle buses take you from view to view. But the roads are open December and January, so we were able to drive ourselves. Each vista brought a different perspective. As the sun and clouds moved, the colors and shadows changed as well. Being off season we didn't have to fight any crowds, instead we were a handful of strangers who would inevitably see each other multiple times during the day, snapping photos for each other to document that we were really there. Taking photos was bittersweet. The subject matter was first class, but there's no way to really capture what you see. You can only take it with you in your mind's eye. Our biggest regret is that we weren't able to hike down below the canyon rim. John had a sore knee from our Doe Mountain hike and was fighting a cold. The weather was very cold and windy. Maybe next time. Here are just a handful of our photos.
Finally....The Grand Canyon
