Sept 10

This was surely the highlight of our time in Barcelona. The unique cathedral designed by Antoni Gaudi, La Sagrada Familia, was stunning in its beauty, light, engineering and symbolism.
I have seen so many photos of it, but none prepared me sufficiently. I have left some cathedrals feeling heavy; they seem to have an oppressiveness. But this one was deliberately designed to take advantage of natural light. In fact Gaudi, a devout follower of Jesus, wanted to incorporate all of God's creation. The inside structure of the columns resemble great tree trunks, with their boughs reaching to heaven. Animals from beetles to reptiles to chickens are part of the tribute.
I always thought of Gaudi as a an extremely talented artist that had a penchant for the unusual. But it's so much more than that. He intended his designs to draw people closer to the Creator he was honoring.
I gave up trying to capture it in photos. I would see something great, snap it and realize I just couldn't get the essence of it.

This was truly the highlight of our time in Barcelona, in my opinion!
I likened it to the Grand Canyon: it can not be appreciated unless you actually experience it first hand!
We enjoyed it so much that we simultaneously agreed to purchase a book, The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, upon our departure. It contains professional photos that could never have obtained otherwise as well as explanations and history.
